Town of Newington
Office of Emergency Management
June 25, 2020
To all Newington Residents:
As you know, Covid-19 can be a very dangerous disease for seniors and people with underlying medical conditions. In response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, the City of Portsmouth, which handles Newington’s welfare issues, has changed emergency response plans for heat waves due to the unsafe conditions that opening a cooling center would present given the risk of an infectious disease circulating in the community. The focus of their planning for heat waves is to assist people to safely shelter in place. Therefore, the Portsmouth Health Department is urging all low-income seniors, persons with disabilities and those under 60 with a severe medical condition, who do not own an air conditioner to contact Portsmouth Welfare Administrator Ellen Tully at (603) 610-7267. For those who do not want an air conditioner, there is also an option to receive a remote controlled fan.
Help is also available to install the air conditioner if needed, and assistance may also be available for help with any increase in electric bills due to the use of the air conditioner. Please act now, before a dangerous heat wave occurs.
If know of a person in need as described above, please pass this information on to them.
